PTI-backed lawmakers in KP declared independent

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially released the party positions of all four provincial assemblies as well as the National Assembly, following the Supreme Court’s August 25 decision.

In a major update, the ECP has declared PTI-backed candidates as independent members, aligning with the apex court’s directions.

According to the ECP documents, the new lists reflect the composition of the National and provincial assemblies, including detailed breakdowns for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan.

The most significant change has been recorded in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), where 92 members previously affiliated with the PTI have now been shown as independent members in the official records.

The ECP document confirms:

Independent members in KP: 92

PML-N members: 17

JUI-F members: 17

PPP members: 11

ANP members: 4

PTI Nazariati members: 3

Sunni Ittehad Council: 1

The commission stated that this classification has been carried out in accordance with the Supreme Court’s ruling, which directed that PTI-backed lawmakers should not be counted under any party banner unless officially notified.

The Supreme Court’s August 25 judgment had clarified the status of PTI-backed independent candidates, instructing the Election Commission to treat them as independents unless they formally joined a registered political party.

Acting on that directive, the ECP has now implemented the decision across all assemblies, ensuring compliance with the constitutional and legal framework governing party positions.
